Urethral stricture disease involves scarring of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out from the bladder through the penis. This may occur a result of prior trauma, urologic surgery, or infection. Often the cause of strictures is unknown. Urethral strictures can narrow the urethra, resulting in difficulty urinating and even complete inability to urinate. Surgical reconstruction of the urethra can result in long-term cure of even the most complex urethral stricture disease. Short strictures can be removed by simple excision of the scarred segment and re-anastomosis (sewing the urethra back together). Longer strictures can be surgically cured with the use of skin flaps or buccal mucosa grafts (made from the inside lining of the mouth).
